The third installment in the massively popular film series based on Capcom’s zombie horror/science fiction games, Resident Evil: Extinction brings the world to an end, not with a whimper but a bang, as Milla Jovovich’s Alice pits her bio-organic superskills against armies of the undead in a post-apocalyptic Las Vegas. Also on hand is a more grown-up version of the games’ Claire Redfield (played by Heroes‘ Ali Larter), who leads a convoy of humans (among them Resident Evil vets Oded Fehr and Mike Epps, who reprise their roles as Carlos and LJ, as well as newcomers Ashanti and Spencer Locke) in search of sanctuary; meanwhile, sinister Umbrella Corporation scientist Dr. Sam Isaacs (Iain Glen) seeks a cure for the zombie virus outbreak via Alice’s blood, which he taps via a lab full of clones. Subtlety has never been the Resident Evil series’ strong suit, but it’s hard to argue against Extinction’s breakneck pace and impressive CG special effects; director Russell Mulcahy (the Highlander series) lends a lot of verve to the proceedings, and the script by producer Paul W.S. Anderson pulls in agreeable touches from The Road Warrior and Day of the Dead. A hit during the summer of 2007, Extinction should please series devotees and action-horror fans alike; the DVD includes commentary by Mulcahy, Anderson, and co-producer Jeremy Bolt, as well as several making-of featurettes, and a glimpse at the next entry in the Resident Evil franchise, the CG-only Degeneration. – Paul Gaita

After serving ten years for killing a rival gang’s boss, Tachibana is expected to pick up where he left off in his career as hitman for the Hirakawa Syndicate.

When he is given Yuki, a prostitute, as a `welcome back’ present, Tachibana finds himself drawn into looking after her, rescuing her both from a serious drug habit and a brutal pimp. When the pimp, whom he has beaten up, turns out to be a member of the larger Hokushin gang, it proves to have dire consequences for both Tachibana and Yuki.

Director Mochizuki shows his class in placing human relationships at the very heart of this gangster film without giving up one iota of tense action.

Robert Redford is the executive producer (and narrator) of this fine, eye-opening documentary about the violent events that took place in 1975 on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Indian activists ended up in an extended standoff with FBI agents, and the result was several deaths, including two federal men whose killing (according to many people) was never clearly attributed to a specific gunman. Nevertheless, the government laid blame for the tragedy on Leonard Peltier, a Sioux political leader who has long been a focus for supporters believing he took the fall, possibly heroically, for others. Peltier has spent many years in prison, and Apted’s film, which is hardly ambiguous in its commitment toward Peltier’s hoped-for freedom, is persuasive in both its detail and its case against brutal federal policies toward Indians. Whatever one’s position on the Peltier question, this is a compelling piece of work. –Tom Keogh

Zachary seeks to free the terrified, imprisoned Sofia, who Ash has crossed over, and put an end to the clan’s evil, decadent ways. In some instances, Vampire Journals suffers from melodramatic acting and overwrought dialogue, and conversation dominates overaction, but the combination of exquisite Romanian locations, Adolfo Bartoli’s sumptuous cinematography, and Richard Kosinki’s moody score will keep you watching. Another striking aspect of the film is that it is shot almost exclusively at nighttime, with the beautiful interiors often bathed in golden light; it offers a good representation of what living in eternal night must be like. –Bryan Reesman
